ТЕМА "ДВУХ СЕСТЕР" В ГОТИЧЕСКОЙ ПОЭЗИИ

Один из вариантов песни "Two Sisters" (Две Сестры) можно услышать на альбоме "Dulaman" группы "Clannad". В поисках текста песни мы столкнулись с таким количеством вариантов, что стало ясно: "две сестры" - не какая-то отдельная песня, а, скорее, обширная тема для поэтических вариаций. Молодой человек, ухаживающий за младшей сестрой и игнорирующий старшую (а, как вы знаете, первой замуж должна была выходить все-таки старшая из сестер), коварство старшей сестры, столкнувшей младшую в воду с обрыва, диалог между ними, и смерть младшей сестры - вот то, что роднит практически все эти тексты (мы нашли их около десятка, а в alt-конференциях обсуждают еще и другие варианты). Clannad поют песню в слегка сокращенном виде: после того, как сестра утонула, ее тело выносит на дамбу, где проворный мельник освобождает труп от всех ценых вещей, после чего сталкивает обратно в воду. После чего сразу же поется куплет про возмездие, постигшее мельника и старшую сестру. Вот так выглядит тема в изложении Clannad:

There were two sisters side by side
Sing i-dum, sing i-day
There were two sisters side by side
The boys are bound for me
There were two sisters side by side
The oldest for young Jonny cried
I'll betrooth unto my love
If you'll betrooth to me

Johny bought to youngest the decor ring

Существует, однако, более мощная концовка - из волос утонувшей девушки делают струны для арфы, и арфа начинает петь сама собой, обличая коварство старшей сестры. Мельник в данном варианте - совершенно нейтральный персонаж, тело девушки находит его дочка, она прибегает к отцу и обращается к нему с почти пушкинскими строчками:

Oh, father, father, there swims a swan
So now, won't you hasten and draw up your dam
Oh, the miller, he came and he drew up his dam
And there he saw the drowned woman
He laid down on the bank to dry
When the King's own harper, he passed by
Oh, he made a harp of her breastbone
Whose sounds would melt a heart of stone
And the strings he formed of her yellow hair
Whose notes made sad the listening ear
Oh, and he laid the harp down on a stone
And soon it began to play all alone

Вот более короткий вариант с "невиновным мельником" и музыкальным инструментом, изготовленным из волос утонувшей девушки (на этот раз это скрипка). Вариант прислан Лизой из Америки, хорош тем, что "совместим" с вариантом Clannad:

He (мельник) gave to his wife a gay gold ring
And the hair to the fiddler to make his strings.

The fiddler played at the wedding day,
The fiddle said "Sister did me slay!"
